IvSU celebrated Day of Slavic Writing and Culture

IvSU celebrated Day of Slavic Writing and Culture

On May, 24 the Department of Russian Philology of the Institute of Humanities held an annual meeting of the Slavic Club dedicated to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture.

For a modern person the Day of Remembrance of Saints Cyril and Methodius it is a tribute to the great service that laid the foundation for Slavic culture, our national cultural code.

St. Cyril (827 - 869) and St. Methodius (815 - 885) successfully fulfilled the Christian mission entrusted to them: they compiled the Slavic alphabet (which they called the Glagolitic) of 38 letters based on the Greek cursive writing and translated books into the Slavic language, without which the divine service could not be performed.

In 893, on the basis of the Glagolitic alphabet, the students and followers of St. Cyril created the Cyrillic alphabet, which eventually supplanted the Glagolitic alphabet in all Slavic countries.

In 1863, in connection with the celebration of the millennium of the Moravian mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius, educators from the Greek city of Thessaloniki (Thessaloniki), the Russian Holy Synod decided to establish an annual celebration in honor of the Monks Methodius and Cyril on May, 11 (May 24 according to the new style). In 1985 in the USSR, May 24 was declared "Day of Slavic Writing and Culture".

For more than 25 years, every year at the Faculty of Philology, this day was celebrated with a festive concert, and this tradition, laid down by the Department of General and Slavic Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology headed by associate professor N. Rogoza and the permanent organizer of the holiday associate professor E. Sakulina, continues today - at the Institute of Humanities, at the Department of Russian Philology, which became the successor to the Faculty of Philology.

As in the good old times, the meeting of the Slavic club was organized by 2nd year students - this year under the guidance of associate professor N. Suvorova, leading specialist of the Department in Slavic linguistics. Students remembered the history of the holiday. Prof. I. Sotova spoke about the cooperation between IvSU and the University of South Bohemia. Poems and songs in Slavic languages were recited. The communication between teachers and students continued over a cup of tea.
