Shakespeare readings – 2021

On April, 30 in the frames of International scientific and practical festival “Science and researches in the classical university” traditional 29th “Shakespeare readings” organized by the Foreign Philology Department took place.

Shakespeare readings is a project aimed to promote cultural and esthetic education of students, involve them into creative activity, introduce them to culturological realities of the target-language country and popularization of Shakespeare works.

Prof. Dr. Olga Karpova, the head of the scientific educational center “Contemporary Russian and European lexicography”, thought leader and initiator of this wonderful tradition addressed to the audience with a welcoming speech. She underlined that Shakespeare as a true genius is inexhaustible and each generation strives to interpret his works, comprehend them more thorough, and say its own word about him.

Participants of Shakespeare readings told about the epoch of the great classic, performed his sonnets in English and showed their own theatrical performances.

The winner in the reading contest became Anastasia Parfyonova, the second year student of “Philology” program. Sudareva Daria and Abramova Daria (the first year), Lobanova Elizaveta and Keller Luiza (the second year) got diplomas.

One of the most popular contest is translation of Shakespeare’s sonnets into Russian. This year 5 beginning poets presented their own versions of translations. Winners in this nomination were Yakimuk Yulia (the third year) and Sokolova Arina (the second year). Demicheva Dari, Majorov Kirill and Nurmetova Dilnoza (the third year) were awarded with diplomas.

It is worth mentioning that younger students took active part in the contest and demonstrated great knowledge of Shakespeare’s works. They participated in Kahoot quiz prepared by second-year students.

The most spectacular was the dramatization contest. The third-year students found a very creative approach to the task and showed original performances inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. Bright costumes, great musical accompaniment, sparkling sense of humour and good English language greatly impressed the audience.

The best readers, translators and actors were awarded with books in English, teaching guides and sweets.

We thank associate professor of the Foreign Philology Department Elena Polyakova for coordination of this festive event.
