"TRANSLATION PALETTE" AT IVSU

International Translation Day, established by the International Federation of Translators in 1991, is celebrated on September 30 and serves as an important date in the world of languages and translation. The establishment of a professional holiday has significantly increased awareness of the importance of translation in the modern world.

On October 1, 1st–3rd year students of the English and German departments took part in the intellectual team game "Translation Palette", moderated by A.V. Vishnevsky, E.A. Shilova and N.Yu Khoretskaya. The guys translated foreign proverbs and puns, demonstrating excellent command of words. The students did an excellent job of restoring quotes from famous personalities - A.S. Pushkin, V.G. Belinsky, A.K. Tolstoy, V. Menzel, W. Churchill and others - about the essence of translation. Probably the most difficult task was translating an excerpt from A.P. Chekhov's "The Lady with the Dog." Four participants from each team sequentially translated the excerpt into English, back into Russian, back into English, and finally back into Russian. The final translation was compared with Chekhov's original. The team whose translation was closest to the original won. During the game, the students demonstrated all the best qualities of translators - knowledge of the language, linguistic creativity, quick reaction, delicacy in working with the original text, persistence in achieving the goal. "Translation Palette" once again reminded everyone that behind each translation there is a lot of work, a deep analysis of linguistic and cultural nuances, and a creative approach.
