IvSU hosted the final of the regional competition of public speaking in English

On May 12, IvSU hosted the finals of the regional competition of public speaking in English in the style of TED-talks “SPEAK UP!”, initiated by the Department of Foreign Philology and the Ivanovo Regional Association of English Teachers IVELTA.

The Director of the Institute for the Humanities, Doctor of Philology S.A. Manik emphasized the importance of developing public speaking skills and learning foreign languages in the modern world and expressed confidence that young and talented speakers definitely have something to share with the audience.

The competition was held in two age categories: students of grades 9–11 of secondary schools and students of grades 1–3 of Ivanovo universities. In total, 24 people became participants in the final.

The contestants spoke fluently and convincingly on a wide variety of topics, demonstrating a high level of English proficiency, as well as the non-verbal communication skills necessary for a successful speaker. They talked about Core life values, The new era of youth startups, Cultural heritage preservation, Why do people blog, Information wars, Travel to live, live to travel), fashion and style (Fashion and style), modern youth subcultures (Youth subcultures) – etc.

The participants were supported by teachers and mentors, but most importantly, by an extremely sympathetic student audience. Support groups responded with loud applause to all performances without exception. First-year students (direction "Pedagogical education (Teaching foreign languages)" showed their own dramatization of Shakespeare's works and thus helped the contestants to pass the time of summing up.

The strict but objective jury included associate professors of the departments of foreign philology and foreign languages (E.M. Grigoryeva, A.V. Vishnevsky, E.A. Polyakova, E.N. Pastukhova, N.Yu. Khoretskaya, O.A. Melentyeva, K.V. Khalikulova) and representatives of the IVELTA Association (Vice-President E.A. Shilova).

In the category of school students, a 10th grade student of gymnasium No. 32, Maria Denisova, won a convincing victory, brilliantly dispelling numerous myths about the nature of stress and its effect on the human body. The diploma of the second degree was awarded to Muhammad Muratov, a student of the International Center for Education "Interdom" named after. Stasova, who conquered the jury with his charm and humor. He spoke about the professions of the future, putting forward, in particular, his own hypotheses. Daria Tarasova, a student of secondary school No. 4, took an honorable third place. The jury noted her excellent English and deep study of the topic of preserving cultural heritage. Nikita Kirsanov, a student of secondary school No. 64, who told the public about how to cope with stress, was awarded a special diploma in the “Idea Generator” nomination.

It was far from easy to choose the winner among the students. As a result of heated debate, Maria Prokofieva, a 1st year student of IvSU of the Philology department (Foreign Philology)", was recognized as the winner. She was awarded a 1st degree diploma. Only slightly lost to the charming winner, her classmate Nikita Dorokhov, taking second place. Berezina Irina, a student of the Ivanovo branch of the RANEPA, became the third winner. Daniil Afanasiev, a student of the Ivanovo State Power University, was awarded a diploma in the Hot Topic nomination.

All speakers received certificates of participation and branded souvenirs from IvSU. The winners and prize-winners were presented with sets of scientific, educational and fiction literature in English. Not a single participant was left without awards! Recall that all contestants who intend to enter IvSU are entitled to receive additional points based on personal achievements.

According to the unanimous opinion of both young speakers and spectators, the competition is certainly interesting and useful and must be continued. Therefore, see you soon! We are looking for new topics and offer new solutions! After all, the goal of every TED conference is to raise serious questions, motivate and inspire new discoveries.
